How To Reach Your Goals (Part 2)

4 Questions You Must Answer

If you’ve written down some goals for this year, you should be proud. Everything starts with clarifying what you want.

In my experience, written goals are 10 times more likely to be achieved than unwritten goals. Written goals, shared with a good friend, and 100 times more likely to be achieved.

Anxiety is a huge obstacle in moving towards goals. Fear of being criticized and rejected. Many people don’t try because they fear letting themselves down and not being able to cope. Whatever the challenge, getting STARTED on your goals is easier if you answer these 4 questions.

Questions On Your Goals

1. What is the main obstacle and how can I overcome it?
2. How can I get accountability (internal and external) around this goal?
3. How will reaching this goal impact me and others?
4. What is one goal-directed action I can take and complete by the end of the day today?

A client told me one of her goals is to make 2 new friendships. For most adults, making new friends is scary. Answering these 4 questions gave her some inspiration.

Emily’s Goal: Make 2 new friendships

1. What is the main obstacle and how can I overcome it?
“The biggest obstacle is my own fear of rejection. I think people will look at me like there is something wrong with me. I can remind myself that I am not alone in my struggle to make new friends.”
2. How can I get accountability (internal and external) around this goal?
“I can tell my co-worker Bill, who is also setting goals for 2020. He will faithfully ask me about my progress.”
3. How will reaching this goal impact me and others?
“It will prove to me that I can get something I want even when I’m terrified. Two new good friends will make life better and less lonely.”
4. What is one action I can take and complete today?
“I can research clubs related to some of my hobbies (e.g. reading, sports, running, cooking, etc.) and contact someone from a group I find.”

Another client set the goal of getting 3 new clients per month. Here are his answers to these questions.

Ben’s Goal: 3 New Clients Per Month

1. What is the main obstacle and how can I overcome it?
“Getting distracted by all the other things going on in my life. Focusing on my marketing checklist and not getting consumed or side-tracked”
2. How can I get accountability (internal and external) around this goal?
“Posting my goal in my car and on my bathroom mirror. Telling my business mentor Jim about this goal”
3. How will reaching this goal impact me and others?
“It will prove to myself that I can focus, and this is important because I really doubt my ability to stay focused on the most important things. If I can do it, I will be very encouraged.”
4. What is one action I can take and complete today?
“I can follow my marketing checklist”

I could see the excitement in my clients’ eyes as they clarified their answers. Both started to believe achieving these goals was possible. This activity will energize you as well. Long lasting motivation always comes from within.
